Athletic Club Tickets & Matchday Guide
San Mamés • Bilbao2025/26 Season
How to Buy Athletic Club Tickets
We cover every path into the stadium: official club channels, officially authorized hospitality partners, and vetted resellers. Each evaluated honestly with realistic expectations so you know exactly what to expect.
Official Athletic Club Tickets
San Mames holds 53,331 fans and approximately 44,000 of those seats belong to season ticket holders (socios). That leaves roughly 9,000 tickets for members and general sale combined, which makes Athletic Club one of the harder grounds to visit in La Liga for international fans. Club Athletic membership (available to anyone) provides priority access before general sale, and is the recommended route for planning a visit.
Club Athletic Premium - priority for top matches:
- • Club Athletic Premium is an annual supporter membership open to anyone worldwide
- • Premium members receive a 24-hour priority pre-sale window for the highest-demand fixtures: European matches, Copa del Rey, and La Liga matches vs. Real Sociedad, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona
- • Also includes a discount voucher applicable to one ticket purchase and free entry to the AC Museoa (museum)
- • The most practical route for visitors planning to attend a top-tier fixture
Club Athletic (basic membership):
- • The standard Club Athletic membership gives priority access before general sale for all home fixtures
- • Includes 50% off AC Museoa entry and free tickets to Athletic Club Women and Bilbao Athletic (reserve team) home matches
- • Discounts at the official store and affiliated partners
- • Available to supporters worldwide via the official website
General sale - realistic expectations:
- • General sale typically opens approximately 15 days before the match for remaining allocation
- • For the Basque derby vs. Real Sociedad, there is effectively no general sale - tickets are exhausted during member windows
- • Mid-table La Liga opponents offer the best general sale availability
- • Without a Club Athletic membership, the secondary market is the only practical option for most visitors
Buying tickets:
- • Official ticket sales via athletic-club.eus/en/tickets/
- • Tickets are digital (QR code on mobile or print at home)
- • International credit and debit cards accepted on the official site
Athletic Club Ticket Strategy
- For the Basque derby vs. Real Sociedad, use LFT or official hospitality - there is no realistic general sale route
- Club Athletic Premium (annual) is worth it if you are planning to attend a European or Copa del Rey fixture
- For standard La Liga fixtures against mid-table opponents, a basic Club Athletic membership plus some patience usually results in a ticket
- The San Mames VIP area is excellent - if budget allows, it is one of La Liga's finest hospitality operations
Athletic Club Official Hospitality & Packages
San Mames has a 6,000 square metre VIP area described as one of the best hospitality setups in European football. The club works with multiple Michelin-starred Basque restaurants to provide catering, and VIP packages include access from 90 minutes before kick-off. This is the most reliable route to a confirmed seat for major fixtures.

Pre-Match Strategy in Bilbao
- Las Pozas (Calle Licenciado Poza) is the main event - start there at least 2 hours before kick-off
- The combination of good pintxos and a relaxed bar atmosphere makes Bilbao one of the great matchday cities in Europe
- If you have more time, start in Casco Viejo (Old Town) for a pintxos crawl, then make your way to Las Pozas before heading to San Mames
Matchday Traditions and Atmosphere
The Basque-Only Policy
Athletic Club operates one of world football's most distinctive and debated philosophies: only players born in the Basque Country, or who learned their football at a Basque club, are eligible for the first team. This policy has been in place since 1911. The region covered extends from Biscay, Gipuzkoa, Alava, and Navarre in Spain to the French Basque provinces of Labourd, Soule, and Lower Navarre. The club's motto translates as: 'With home-grown talent and local support, there's no need for imports.' Athletic Club has never been relegated from La Liga - a record shared only with Real Madrid and Barcelona - and has achieved this while operating under self-imposed restrictions that no other major club in Europe follows. Attending a match means watching one of football's great social experiments in real time.
Atmosphere at San Mames
San Mames is nicknamed La Catedral (The Cathedral) and the atmosphere justifies it. The new ground opened in 2013 and was designed specifically for football - no athletics track, steep stands, and a roof that traps noise. The club's passionate, intensely local fanbase creates an atmosphere that most Premier League stadiums cannot match. The pre-match walk along Calle Licenciado Poza (known as Las Pozas) is a Bilbao institution - the street fills with supporters from noon onwards, with pintxos bars overflowing onto the pavement.
The Basque Derby vs. Real Sociedad
The match against Real Sociedad is the defining fixture of the Basque football calendar. Both clubs draw from the same regional pool of players and both represent Basque identity fiercely. The rivalry is passionate but broadly respectful - this is a derby between neighbours who share culture and language rather than between ideologically opposed fanbases. The atmosphere at San Mames for this fixture is extraordinary. Getting a ticket requires planning months in advance.
Pintxos Before the Match
Bilbao's food scene rivals San Sebastian's, and the matchday culture is built around the pintxos crawl. Calle Licenciado Poza (Las Pozas) and the streets around Indautxu neighbourhood are the traditional pre-match hub. Bars like Oskarbi Taberna and the unnamed spots along Las Pozas fill with supporters from two or three hours before kick-off. The combination of pintxos, txakoli, and the walk to San Mames along the Ria de Bilbao makes for one of European football's great matchday experiences.
Visitor Tips
- Allow 2-3 hours for the Las Pozas pintxos crawl before the match - it is as much the experience as the football itself
- The Metro Bilbao runs directly to San Mames station (Lines 1 and 2) - the most practical way to arrive from the city centre or Casco Viejo
- The Guggenheim Museum is 20 minutes walk from the stadium - combining both in a day or weekend is entirely feasible
