Ballot System

St James' Park holds 52,305 fans and regularly sells out. Since the Saudi-led takeover in 2021 and a return to the Champions League, demand for Newcastle tickets has reached levels not seen in decades. A paid membership is required to access ticket sales, and even then, a ballot system determines who gets the chance to buy for most fixtures.

Quick reality check for visitors:
  • Sunderland (the Tyne-Wear derby), Manchester United, Liverpool, Champions League knockouts: Near impossible through official channels without years of match credits. Hospitality or verified marketplaces are your realistic options
  • Mid-table Premier League fixtures: Possible via the Mags ballot, but not guaranteed. Around 70% of tickets go to season ticket holders, with the remaining split between members and hospitality
  • Cup competitions and early Champions League group stage: Best targets for first-time visitors through official channels
  • Newcastle's post-takeover resurgence has made every home match high demand. The days of easily available tickets are over
The membership and ballot system:
  • Newcastle requires a paid 'Mags' membership to access any ticket sales. The basic Mags tier costs around the price of a couple of matchday pints per year
  • Mags+ is a higher tier that adds priority purchase for non-football events, free pre-season access, and additional retail discounts
  • Ticket sales work on a ballot system. Members enter the ballot, and if selected, get the opportunity to purchase. Being selected is not guaranteed
  • After the ballot, any remaining tickets go to a members' general sale on a first-come, first-served basis. These sell out within minutes for popular fixtures
How the ballot process works:
  • Mags+ members enter the ballot first, followed by Mags members
  • If you win the ballot, you receive a window to purchase your ticket. Miss the window and you lose your spot
  • For the biggest fixtures, the ballot is heavily oversubscribed. Winning is not guaranteed even with membership
  • The club communicates ballot windows and results via email and through the account dashboard at book.newcastleunited.com
Newcastle United Ticket Exchange (your backup plan):
  • Season ticket holders can resell their tickets back to the club when they cannot attend. These go back on sale to members at face value
  • Ticket resale opens approximately three weeks before each fixture via your account at book.newcastleunited.com
  • Members only, face value only. A genuine way to pick up tickets for sold-out matches
  • For big fixtures, exchange tickets get snapped up quickly. Check regularly in the weeks before the match
What's realistically accessible without match credits:
  • Best targets: Cup matches, early Champions League group stage, and lower-demand Premier League fixtures against newly promoted sides
  • Mid-tier: You might get lucky in the ballot for mid-table Premier League fixtures, but it is far from certain
  • Near impossible: Sunderland, the big six, and Champions League knockouts. Use hospitality or marketplaces for these
  • Our take: Buy a Mags membership if you are planning ahead and targeting a specific mid-tier match. For big matches, go straight to hospitality or a verified marketplace
Pricing (when you get through):
  • Newcastle uses a category system based on the opposition. Higher-profile opponents mean higher ticket prices
  • Budget-friendly options exist in the upper tiers, particularly in the Leazes End and Gallowgate End
  • Premium seats in the Milburn Stand and East Stand carry the highest prices
  • Face value is still significantly cheaper than secondary market prices. Worth the effort if you can get through
💡

When Official Tickets Work

  • Buy a Mags membership well before your trip and enter the ballot as soon as it opens. Target lower-category fixtures for the best odds
  • Check the Ticket Exchange regularly in the three weeks before the match. Season ticket holders release tickets for matches they cannot attend, and these go at face value
  • Cup competitions in earlier rounds are your best bet for official tickets without an extensive purchase history
  • The Magpie Mover ticket (included with Mags+ or available separately) gives season ticket holders and members matchday travel across the Tyne and Wear network, including the Metro to St James

Newcastle United Ticket Marketplaces

Wide Availability
Higher Prices
Buyer Protection

Secondary market platforms with availability when official channels sell out. Newcastle's consistently sold-out stadium and lack of an official reseller programme means marketplaces are a common route for international visitors targeting high-demand fixtures.

Ticket resale platforms operate independently of Newcastle United and Matchday Guide. Clubs reserve the right to refuse entry for unauthorized tickets. All purchases are at your own risk. We recommend choosing vendors with buyer protection and checking ratings on Trustpilot.

LiveFootballTickets.com
Preferred Marketplace

Specialized football platform with 150% money-back guarantee and transparent pricing focused on European matches.

HelloTickets

Marketplace Safety Tips

  • Newcastle uses digital ticketing. Ensure your marketplace can deliver mobile tickets or transfer them to your account
  • Prices for Sunderland, big six, and Champions League fixtures can be significantly higher than face value. Mid-table Premier League fixtures offer better value on the secondary market
  • Book through platforms offering full buyer guarantees. Newcastle's anti-touting stance means there is always a small risk with unofficial tickets

Newcastle Hotel Strategy

  • Newcastle's unique advantage: St James' Park is in the city centre. Almost any central hotel puts you within walking distance of the stadium, the pubs, and the nightlife
  • The Quayside along the River Tyne is the most scenic area to stay, with restaurants and bars along the water. The trade-off is a 15-minute uphill walk to the ground
  • Book early for Sunderland derbies, Champions League nights, and big Premier League fixtures. Newcastle's hotel capacity can strain when 52,000 fans descend on the city

Getting to St James' Park

St James' Park is in the centre of Newcastle, making it one of the most accessible stadiums in English football. If you are staying in a central hotel, you can walk. The Tyne and Wear Metro has a station directly below the stadium, and Newcastle Central Station is a 10-minute walk away. Driving is not recommended on matchdays.

Walking (Recommended for City Centre Hotels)

From City Centre (Grey Street / Monument area)

5-10 minute walk | | Walk north from Monument or Grey Street. The stadium is visible on the skyline from most of the city centre. Follow the crowds on matchdays.

Journey time: 5-15 minutes depending on starting point
Frequency: N/A
Cost: Free

Tips:

  • The walk from the city centre to St James' Park is uphill but short. The stadium dominates the Newcastle skyline and is hard to miss
  • From the Quayside / River Tyne area, the walk is steeper and takes around 15 minutes. Consider a Metro or taxi if you prefer to avoid the hill

Metro (Tyne and Wear Metro) (Tyne and Wear Metro)

St James

Directly below the stadium | Yellow Line | The closest Metro station, directly underneath St James' Park. Only served by the Yellow Line, which limits connections. Gets very congested before kickoff and after the final whistle.

Monument

5-minute walk from the stadium | Yellow Line, Green Line | Served by both Metro lines, making it accessible from more locations. A short walk uphill to the stadium. Often a better option than St James station because it is less crowded on matchdays.

Journey time: Varies by origin. From Newcastle Central Station area, Monument is one stop.
Frequency: Every 6-12 minutes depending on time and day. Enhanced services on matchdays.
Cost: Standard Metro fare. The Magpie Mover annual ticket covers matchday travel across the Tyne and Wear network for members.

Tips:

  • Monument station is often the better choice on matchdays. It is served by both Metro lines and only a 5-minute walk from the ground, avoiding the crush at St James station
  • After the match, walk to Monument or Central Station rather than trying to squeeze into St James station. The 5-minute walk saves significant queuing time
  • Pop Up (pay as you go) smart cards and contactless payment work on the Metro. No need to buy individual tickets

Train (National Rail) (National Rail)

Newcastle Central Station

10-minute walk from St James' Park | LNER (London King's Cross), CrossCountry, TransPennine Express, Northern | Newcastle's main railway station, connected to London (under 3 hours by LNER), Edinburgh (1.5 hours), Manchester, Leeds, and other major cities. A 10-minute walk west along Neville Street and up St James' Boulevard to the stadium.

Journey time: London King's Cross: Under 3 hours. Edinburgh: Around 1.5 hours. Manchester: Around 3 hours.
Frequency: Multiple daily services from all major cities.
Cost: Varies by route and booking time. Advance fares offer significant savings.

Tips:

  • Book LNER trains in advance for the best fares from London. Standard class advance tickets can be very affordable
  • Central Station is an easy walk to both the stadium and the city centre. No need for a connecting Metro unless you want to avoid the hill

Matchday Traditions & Atmosphere

Pre-Match Build-Up

St James' Park sits right in the heart of Newcastle city centre, which makes the pre-match build-up unlike most English grounds. There is no long walk from a station to a suburban stadium. Instead, fans spill out of the pubs and bars that surround the ground on all sides. The Strawberry, directly opposite the Gallowgate End, fills up hours before kickoff. The Bigg Market and Grainger Street area, a few minutes' walk south, buzzes with black and white shirts. On big European nights, the entire city centre takes on a matchday atmosphere.

Inside St James' Park

The Gallowgate End is the loudest section, where the most vocal supporters gather. 'Blaydon Races' is the traditional anthem, sung before kickoff and when the team is winning. 'Local Hero' by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits plays as the teams walk out, and the whole ground joins in. The steep, towering stands create an enclosed bowl that amplifies the noise, and the sight of 52,000 fans in black and white is one of English football's great spectacles. The Leazes End opposite houses the away fans.

The Tyne-Wear Derby (vs Sunderland)

The rivalry with Sunderland is one of the most intense in English football. Derbies between the two had been absent for years due to Sunderland's time in the lower leagues, but their return to the Premier League has revived one of the game's fiercest local rivalries. These matches carry enormous emotion for both sets of fans. Tickets are essentially impossible through official channels without a long purchase history.

Post-Match

The city centre location means post-match is straightforward. Fans pour out of the ground and straight into the surrounding pubs and restaurants. The Bigg Market, Collingwood Street, and the Quayside along the River Tyne are all within a 10-15 minute walk. Newcastle's nightlife is well-known across England, and matchday evenings, especially after a win, carry a strong atmosphere across the city centre.

💡

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive at least 90 minutes early for big matches. The pubs around St James' Park fill up fast, and the pre-match atmosphere in the city centre is worth experiencing
  • The Gallowgate End has the best atmosphere but can be intense. The Milburn Stand and East Stand offer excellent views with a slightly more relaxed setting
  • Newcastle city centre and the stadium are essentially the same location. You do not need transport between your hotel and the ground if you are staying centrally

Pre-Match Pubs & Atmosphere

Newcastle has one of the best pub scenes in England, and the city centre location of St James' Park means you are surrounded by options. The pubs directly around the stadium are the most atmospheric on matchdays, while the wider Bigg Market and Grainger Street areas offer more variety. Newcastle fans take their pre-match pint seriously.

The Strawberry

Directly opposite St James' Park (Gallowgate End)

Atmosphere: Traditional pub, Newcastle United shrine, Historic

The definitive Newcastle United matchday pub. Directly opposite the Gallowgate End, The Strawberry has been the pre-match gathering spot for decades. The walls are covered in signed shirts and NUFC memorabilia. Real ales on tap and a packed-out atmosphere on matchdays. This is the one pub every visiting fan should experience.

Entry notes: Gets extremely crowded on matchdays. Arrive at least 2 hours before kickoff for any chance of getting in. Home fans dominate but visitors are welcome.

The Bodega

10-minute walk from St James' Park (Westgate Road)

Atmosphere: Traditional, Real ale pub, Victorian architecture

A Victorian-era pub with stained glass domes, tiled floors, and a traditional long bar. Won CAMRA Real Ale Pub of the Year multiple times. Located halfway between Central Station and the stadium on Westgate Road, making it a natural stop on the walk to the ground. Large screens show live sport.

Entry notes: Open to all fans. A good option if The Strawberry is too packed. The location between the station and the ground makes it a convenient first stop.

The Trent House

5-minute walk from St James' Park (Leazes Lane)

Atmosphere: Local pub, Relaxed, Student-friendly

A no-frills local boozer on Leazes Lane, just down from the stadium. Known for cold pints, a free jukebox, and a pool table upstairs. Popular with students and locals. A more laid-back alternative to the intensity of The Strawberry on matchdays.

Entry notes: Open to all. Closed on Sundays, so check if your match falls on a Sunday. More relaxed entry than the bigger matchday pubs.

Shearer's Bar

Inside St James' Park (Gallowgate End)

Atmosphere: Sports bar, Stadium venue, Modern

Located at the Gallowgate End of St James' Park itself. Named after Newcastle's all-time top scorer Alan Shearer. Multiple screens showing live sport, a matchday food and drink menu, and the atmosphere of being inside the stadium before the game starts. Open on matchdays and for major sporting events.

Entry notes: A hospitality and events venue. Check availability on the Newcastle United website. Open to the public for some events but primarily a matchday hospitality space.

💡

Pre-Match Strategy

  • The Strawberry is the must-visit, but arrive early. By 90 minutes before kickoff on big matchdays it is standing room only, if you can get in at all
  • The Bodega is the best alternative if The Strawberry is full. Excellent real ale, beautiful building, and on the natural walking route from Central Station to the ground
  • Newcastle's Bigg Market area (5-minute walk south of the stadium) has dozens of bars and is a classic pre-match destination for groups. It can get lively
