Sócio Card for Big Matches
Face Value

Estádio do Dragão holds around 50,000 fans, and FC Porto's status as one of Portugal's 'Big Three' means high-demand matches sell out quickly. The good news for international visitors: most regular Liga Portugal fixtures reach general sale, and the official website is available in English.

Quick reality check for visitors:
  • Benfica (O Clássico), Sporting CP, and Champions League knockout matches: Extremely high demand. Sócio members get priority. Hospitality or verified marketplaces are your realistic options
  • Mid-table Liga Portugal: Available through general sale with a free account on the FC Porto website. The Dragão's 50,000 capacity helps
  • Cup competitions and early Champions League group stage: Good availability at face value through official channels
  • Porto's consistent Champions League qualification and domestic dominance drive strong demand across the season
FC Porto's ticketing system:
  • Tickets are sold through the official FC Porto website at fcporto.pt/en/store/tickets. Create a free account to access general sale
  • The Sócio (member) card gives priority access to ticket sales for high-demand matches. Members with the most consistent match attendance get the earliest access windows
  • Non-members can purchase tickets for most Liga Portugal fixtures once general sale opens, typically a few days before the match
How the ticket sale process works:
  • Season ticket holders (Lugares Anuais) have automatic access to every home match
  • Sócio members receive priority windows based on their attendance record. The more matches attended, the earlier the access
  • General sale opens after member windows close, for matches that have remaining capacity
  • For O Clássico and Champions League knockouts, tickets rarely reach general sale. A Sócio card or alternative route is essential
Important for international visitors:
  • The official website is fully available in English at fcporto.pt/en/store/tickets and accepts international credit cards
  • A valid ID (passport for international visitors) may be required at the stadium gate
  • E-tickets and mobile tickets are standard. Have your confirmation and ID ready on your phone
  • P1Travel is an authorized ticket provider for FC Porto and offers ticket-and-hotel packages designed for international visitors
💡

Porto Ticket Strategy

  • For most Liga Portugal matches, a free account on the FC Porto website is enough to buy tickets during general sale. No Socio card needed for routine fixtures
  • For O Classico (vs Benfica), Sporting CP, and Champions League matches, invest in a Socio membership or look at hospitality and marketplaces. These regularly sell out before general sale
  • The Curva Sul produces the best atmosphere but is dominated by Super Dragoes members. The Bancada Nascente (East) and Bancada Poente (West) offer the best views with good atmosphere

Porto Hotel Strategy for FC Porto Matches

  • The Ribeira district is the most atmospheric base, with port wine cellars, waterfront restaurants, and the iconic Dom Luis I Bridge. Metro to the stadium takes about 20 minutes
  • Avenida dos Aliados is Porto's grand boulevard and the commercial heart of the city. Central, well-connected, and surrounded by restaurants and bars
  • Book early for O Classico (vs Benfica) and Champions League nights. Porto hotels fill up around major fixtures and during peak season (June to September)

Getting to Estádio do Dragão

Estádio do Dragão has its own dedicated metro station, making it one of the easiest stadiums in Europe to reach by public transport. Four metro lines stop directly at the ground. Allow extra time on matchdays as the station gets very busy with 50,000 fans converging on one stop.

Metro (Recommended) (Metro do Porto)

Estádio do Dragão

5-minute walk to stadium gates | Line A (Blue), Line B (Red), Line E (Violet), Line F (Orange) | The purpose-built station for the stadium. Four metro lines converge here, making it accessible from almost anywhere in the Porto metropolitan area. Follow the crowds on matchdays. Gets very congested before kickoff and immediately after the final whistle.

Journey time: Around 15-20 minutes from Aliados or Trindade (city centre). Direct connection from Porto Airport via Line E (around 30 minutes).
Frequency: Every 5-8 minutes during peak hours. Enhanced services on matchdays.
Cost: Standard Andante ticket. Zone-based pricing depending on your starting station.

Tips:

  • Estádio do Dragão station is one stop from Campanhã, Porto's main railway station. If arriving by train from Lisbon, you are one metro stop from the stadium
  • After the match, the station gets extremely crowded. Consider walking one stop to Campanhã to board a less packed train, or wait 20-30 minutes for the crowds to thin
  • Buy an Andante rechargeable card for the metro rather than individual tickets. Available at any metro station

Train to Campanhã (CP (Comboios de Portugal))

Porto Campanhã

One metro stop or 15-minute walk to stadium | National rail services | Porto's main railway station is the next metro stop from the stadium. If arriving by intercity train from Lisbon, Braga, or Coimbra, you can take one metro stop to Estádio do Dragão or walk approximately 15 minutes.

Journey time: Varies by origin. Lisbon to Porto Campanhã is approximately 3 hours by Alfa Pendular train. Then one metro stop to the stadium.
Frequency: Multiple daily services from Lisbon and other Portuguese cities.
Cost: Intercity rail ticket plus standard metro fare for one stop.

Tips:

  • The walk from Campanhã to the stadium is straightforward and well-signed on matchdays
  • Campanhã is a larger station with more capacity than the Estádio do Dragão metro stop. After the match, walking here can mean a less crowded metro experience

Matchday Traditions & Atmosphere

Pre-Match Build-Up

The streets around the Dragão come alive on matchdays as fans pour in from across Porto and northern Portugal. The stadium sits in the Campanhã district in eastern Porto, connected by its own metro station. Scarf sellers and food vendors line the approaches. Many fans gather in the city centre at bars along Avenida dos Aliados before taking the metro to the ground, while others head to Brasão Antas near the stadium for a Francesinha (Porto's signature sandwich) before kickoff. The blue and white of Porto dominate the streets, and the drumming from the Super Dragões can be heard from outside the ground as you approach.

Inside the Dragon's Lair

The Curva Sul (South Stand) is the home of the Super Dragões, founded in 1986 and now the biggest ultra group in the Iberian Peninsula with around 5,000 members. Between 3,500 and 5,000 fans stand throughout every match in the Curva Sul, producing non-stop chanting, giant flags, coordinated tifo displays, and pyrotechnic shows. The Colectivo Ultras 95 occupy parts of the North Stand and add to the atmosphere with their own displays. The dragon motif runs through everything at the stadium, from the club crest to the architecture itself, with the stadium's name literally translating to 'Stadium of the Dragon.' On big European nights, the atmosphere inside the Dragão is among the most intimidating in continental football.

O Clássico (vs Benfica)

The rivalry between Porto and Benfica is the defining fixture of Portuguese football, known as O Clássico. It represents the historic north-south divide in Portugal, with Porto as the pride of the north and Benfica representing Lisbon. The two clubs have dominated Portuguese football for over a century, and every meeting carries enormous weight for the league title, national pride, and bragging rights. The atmosphere at the Dragão for O Clássico is the most intense of the season, with the Super Dragões producing their most elaborate displays. Tickets for this fixture almost never reach general sale.

Post-Match

After the final whistle, fans stream toward the Estádio do Dragão metro station, which can be congested for 20-30 minutes as 50,000 fans disperse. The metro runs enhanced services on matchdays to handle the crowds. Many supporters head back into central Porto for dinner and nightlife, with the Ribeira waterfront district, Rua de Galerias de Paris (the main nightlife street), and the restaurants along Avenida dos Aliados all popular destinations. Porto is compact and walkable once you are back in the centre, making it easy to find a post-match meal and drinks.

💡

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive at least 60-90 minutes early for big matches. The single metro station serves the entire stadium and gets very busy before kickoff
  • The Curva Sul (Super Dragoes) offers the most intense atmosphere but is dominated by ultra group members. The Bancada Nascente or Bancada Poente are better for first-time visitors
  • The Campanha neighbourhood around the stadium is not the most scenic. The metro makes it easy to get back to the historic centre quickly after the match

Pre-Match Bars for FC Porto Matches

Porto's pre-match scene is split between the city centre and the stadium area. Unlike some cities where pubs cluster around the ground, Porto fans traditionally gather in the Aliados and Baixa districts downtown before taking the metro to the Dragão. That said, Brasão Antas near the stadium is a popular stop for fans arriving early. Porto's cafe and bar culture is relaxed, with port wine, Super Bock beer, and a Francesinha sandwich forming the classic pre-match ritual.

Brasão Antas

Short walk from Estádio do Dragão

Atmosphere: Restaurant-bar, Francesinha specialists, Lively

A popular restaurant-bar in the Antas district, a short walk from the Dragão. Famous for serving one of the best Francesinhas in Porto, the city's signature sandwich layered with sausage and steak in a rich sauce. Gets busy with fans on matchdays and has a lively atmosphere. A natural pre-match stop for supporters arriving in the stadium area early.

Entry notes: Book a table in advance on matchdays as it gets very crowded. Walk-ins may face a wait. Worth arriving early for the Francesinha alone.

Adega Sports Bar

City centre (Aliados area), 15-minute metro ride to stadium

Atmosphere: Sports bar, Multiple screens, Pool and darts

Porto's first and best dedicated sports bar, in the Aliados area downtown. Features large TVs throughout, pool tables, darts, and beer pong. Serves port wine alongside British, Belgian, and international beers. The 'You'll Never Drink Alone' logo at the door sets the tone. A proper sports bar atmosphere that works well as a pre-match base before taking the metro to the Dragão.

Entry notes: Open to all fans. A popular gathering point for international visitors before FC Porto matches. The Aliados metro station is a short walk away for the 15-minute ride to the stadium.

Alfredo Portista

City centre (Baixa), 15-minute metro ride to stadium

Atmosphere: Traditional tasca, FC Porto shrine, Historic

A tiny traditional tasca that has been an FC Porto shrine for over sixty years. The blue facade and Portugal flag are the only external markers. Inside, team line-ups from across the decades cover the walls, and cheap wine flows to a loyal local clientele. Rated 4.8 on Google with fans raving about the authentic atmosphere and affordable bifanas and bacalhau. This is not a tourist bar but a genuine piece of Porto football culture.

Entry notes: Welcoming to visitors despite its local character. Very small, so it fills up quickly. The real deal for anyone wanting to experience Porto's football culture beyond the stadium.

Guindalense

Ribeira area, 20-minute metro ride to stadium

Atmosphere: Quirky bar, Rooftop terrace, River views

A quirky small bar by the Douro riverfront with a sun-catching rooftop terrace overlooking the river. Associated with the Guindalense Football Club, giving it genuine football roots. A great spot for a pre-match drink with views of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Vila Nova de Gaia before heading to the Dragão. The terrace is the draw, especially on sunny matchdays.

Entry notes: Open to all. The rooftop terrace gets busy on warm days. A more scenic, relaxed pre-match option compared to the sports bars. Best combined with a stroll through the Ribeira before taking the metro.

💡

Pre-Match Strategy

  • Brasao Antas is the best near-stadium option. Arrive early for a Francesinha, a genuine Porto institution. The sandwich alone is worth the trip
  • Alfredo Portista is the most authentic FC Porto fan bar in the city. Tiny, historic, and unapologetically blue and white. Worth seeking out
  • The classic Porto matchday routine: drinks and Francesinhas in the Baixa or Aliados, then the metro to Estadio do Dragao. The whole journey takes 15-20 minutes
