Getting to Mestalla
Mestalla is one of the easiest major football stadiums in Europe to reach. It sits right in the city centre along Avenida de Aragon, served by its own metro station (Aragon) and multiple bus routes. Most visitors can walk from central hotels.

Line 5 connects to the city centre (Xativa, near the main train station) in about 6 minutes and runs all the way to the airport. Line 7 provides additional connections. 10-minute walk from the stadium | Line 3, Line 5, Line 7, Line 9 | Alternative station served by more lines. A useful option if Aragon is very crowded after the match. The walk to Mestalla takes about 10 minutes along Avenida de Blasco Ibanez.
Journey time: Around 6 minutes from Xativa (city centre / main train station). Direct connection from Valencia Airport via Line 5.
Frequency: Every 5-15 minutes depending on time of day. Enhanced services on matchdays.
Cost: Standard Metrovalencia ticket. Zone-based pricing. A single trip within the central zone covers most tourist areas and the stadium.

- From the city centre, take Line 5 from Xativa (next to the main train station) to Aragon. It is just two stops

- If arriving by AVE high-speed train at Joaquin Sorolla station, the adjacent metro station connects via Line 5 directly to Aragon

Mestalla sits right in the city centre, in the Mestalla neighbourhood just off Avenida de Aragon. This means the pre-match atmosphere spills into the surrounding streets far more naturally than at out-of-town stadiums. Fans gather at bars and tapas spots within walking distance of the ground, and scarf sellers line the approaches from Aragon metro station. The area around the stadium fills up one to two hours before kickoff. Many fans stop for a cerveza and tapas at the bars along Avenida de Suecia and the streets around Plaza del Valencia CF before heading in.
Inside Mestalla
Mestalla is famous for its steep, vertically built stands that bring fans right on top of the pitch. The result is an atmosphere that feels intense and enclosed even at games that are not sold out. The Curva Nord is home to the club's most vocal fan groups and produces the bulk of the noise, with coordinated chanting and flag displays throughout the match. The club anthem and 'Amunt Valencia' ring around the ground before kickoff. Mestalla is the oldest stadium still in use in La Liga and has hosted international matches, Champions League finals, and Copa del Rey finals over its near-century of history.
Derby del Turia (vs Levante UD)
The city rivalry between Valencia CF and Levante UD is known as the Derby del Turia, named after the river that runs through the city. It is more of a local pride fixture than a fierce hatred, though it carries plenty of intensity when both teams are in the same division. Valencia are historically the dominant side, and the derby atmosphere at Mestalla is lively when it happens. Levante's home ground, Ciutat de Valencia, is also in the city, making it a genuine neighbourhood derby.
Post-Match
After the match, fans stream out toward Aragon metro station and the surrounding streets. The station can be busy for 15-20 minutes after the final whistle but queues move quickly. Because Mestalla is in the city centre, many fans simply walk to nearby bars and restaurants rather than rushing for transport. The Ruzafa neighbourhood, a 15-minute walk south, is popular for post-match tapas and drinks. With late kickoffs common in Spain, post-match dining fits naturally into local eating habits.

- Arrive at least 45-60 minutes early. Mestalla's city-centre location means the pre-match atmosphere in the surrounding streets is part of the experience
- The Curva Nord is the loud end but is dominated by fan groups. The Tribuna and Lateral stands are better for first-time visitors who want a full view of the action
- Late kickoffs are standard in Spain. A 9pm kickoff means the match finishes around 11pm, which is perfectly normal for dinner time in Valencia. Plan accordingly
- Mestalla is one of the oldest stadiums in European football and will eventually be replaced by the Nou Mestalla, currently under construction with a target opening of 2027. Visiting the current Mestalla while it still stands is a genuine bucket-list experience
